Closet into office

Closet into office

No kidding.
With space at a premium and no real amount of hanging clothing to worry about (nothing another closet elsewhere can't handle), I said, "why not?"

The distance between the end of my bed and the start of my desk was too short - it made sitting at my desk a pain. Plus, the desk was fairly long - so, I could either move the desk away from the bedroom door, thus making entering and exiting my desk chair a complete cluster OR move it towards the door, which made sitting easier, but the path from door to bed very very narrow. I opted for the latter, but it was pissing me off.

Then, the rain came and an old roof leak began again - right over the computer (damage - one copy of the complete Bone comic series. The computer NEARLY bought it.) That's a tale for another time, but while it's fixed now, it was the camel crippling straw that put me to work.

All I needed was to empty the closet. Then I bought a jigsaw ($20, Canadian Tire), to saw an old Ikea table (my old desk - I dislike desk desks, and prefer worktops) length wise (taking about one third off.)

The back legs I repositioned forward (I was afraid that the corners would have some sort of extra wood for anchoring, compared to the body, which is cardboard honeycombed between laminate wood - it turns out, that's not the case. The legs really just screw into the laminate, just in five places, creating some vague stability on the cheap)

AND WAS STUNNED TO FIND...

...that the desk length is 1cm shorter than the length of the closet. Talk about perfect.

I drilled a one and a half inch hole through the back right corner of the tabletop for running cords through, and set up my computer. An old coat hook on the wall got turned into a wire hook - my 4 port USB hub hangs there, allowing my to plug in a variey of things (iPod, camera, PSP, phone) which I then place on top of the computer case. I may move it down below, but for now...

In a moment of insane inspiration, I decide to use the remaining desk to make a second shelf. This would require braces on the sides and back, which I didn't have, so I went down to the laundry room and found three legs from some old table someone abandoned. They were, as you see, wavy, which was a bitch to place, but kind of look cool. The best part is that the hanger bar (which I don't want to remove, as I will be moving out some day and the new tenants will likely want a closet again) sits just under the original shelf, acting like those book braces you see on ships, to keep them falling off. Not that I need them, but it's nice that it's not in the way.

Quick, dirty, cheap - took maybe three hours total and less than $100 bucks.

And now I've got a mini-office.

Cuba's homemade cameras

Cuba's homemade cameras

One of the things I like about Cuba, a reason for returning several
times, is their willingness to reuse materials that most North Americans
throw away. Bicycles are remade over and over into useful vehicles.
Paper is recycled. And tin-cans are turned into novelties to sell to the
tourists. Most of these remade tin-cans are models of old American cars
but, at least in some tourist areas, little Jack-in-the-box toys are
made in the shape of cameras. This is my second one, both of which I
bought in the Varadero area, four years apart. The first was made from
Tropicola cans; this one is made from empty cans of one of my favourite
beers, Mayabe. Unlike my first, this one has a flash on the top. You
can see that almost every part of the can has a use: the pull-tab serves
both as viewfinder and as strap lugs. The can's top serves both as lens
cover and flash. Besides the can parts, there are a few small rivets
plus a bit of what looks like #22 copper wire (holding the lens cap on)
and a longer bit of perhaps #8 wire that serves as the shutter release. You can
see the 2-cm length of heavy wire on the back; as you push that down, it
rotates the little hook on the lens cap to free up the lens cap. And . . .
Pop! Out comes Jack. Jack always surprises people who ask about the
neat camera, which I always tell them works and then ask them to pose. : )

The woman who sold me this (for ten pesos) told me she and her family
make the cars and cameras she sells; well, maybe that was true. But in
any case, someone hand-made them, and I love the camera.
